Neuchatel
Neuchatel is Mastic Asphalt. The name Neuchatel (New Castle) is the name of a town in Switzerland which was one of the original sources of naturally formed rock aggregates mixed with Bitumen. This was an early source of the products which are used in the manufacture of mastic asphalt. They later improved the “mix” with the addition of more Bitumen generally sourced from Trinidad.
The name Neuchatel in NZ stems from The Neuchatel Asphalte Co. Ltd. which handled sales in Australia and New Zealand. They were the distributors for the Trinidad Lake Asphalt Co. Ltd.
Two ex Neuchatel workers who move to New Zealand and formed the company Fulton Hogan in 1933, have used the product extensively for many years with great success.
It has taken pride of place in New Zealand ever since and has proven itself to be a highly durable and a long life product.
